Rwanda Marks Completion of Smart Education Project Phase I and Launches the DigiTruck Initiative
The Ministry of Education, in partnership with the Ministry of ICT and Innovation and Huawei Technologies celebrated two major milestones in Rwanda’s digital transformation journey: the completion of Phase I of the Rwanda Smart Education Project and the official launch of the DigiTruck Project at Kagarama Secondary School in Kicukiro District.
The Smart Education Project is a flagship initiative designed to accelerate the integration of technology in Rwanda’s education system. Under Phase I, 1,500 schools across the country have been connected to high-speed internet, and two state-of-the-art data centers have been established. These investments lay the foundation for a dedicated national education network that will enable digital teaching, learning, and data-driven management across all schools.
Speaking at the event, Minister of Education, Joseph Nsengimana, reaffirmed Rwanda’s commitment to building a digitally empowered education system that supports equitable access to technology for learners and teachers nationwide.
“Phase I of the Rwanda Smart Education Project has been a resounding success,” the Minister said. “Through this initiative, 1,500 schools across the country are now connected to high-speed internet. In addition, two state-of-the-art data centers have been established, laying the foundation for a dedicated national education network that supports digital teaching and learning. This milestone directly contributes to Rwanda’s Vision 2050 and the National Strategy for Transformation, positioning our country to compete globally in the knowledge economy.”
Alongside the celebration of the Smart Education milestone, the event also featured the launch of the Rwanda DigiTruck — a mobile, solar-powered classroom equipped with laptops, internet connectivity, and digital tools. The DigiTruck will travel to all 30 districts over the next three years, delivering free digital skills training to more than 5,000 youth, women, and farmers.
This initiative is part of Rwanda’s broader goal to train one million citizens in digital skills, ensuring that no one is left behind in the country’s digital transformation journey.
The event was attended by senior officials from both ministries, representatives from Huawei Technologies, teachers, students, and local leaders — all celebrating a shared vision of innovation, inclusion, and excellence in education.
