Rwanda’s higher learning institutions unite for academic excellence

Kigali, October 31, 2024 : Rwanda’s Higher Learning Institutions Unite for Academic Excellence Leaders, policymakers, and experts from Rwandan higher education institutions gathered today to collaboratively discuss ways to enhance the quality and impact of higher education in Rwanda. This forum was inspired by an ongoing comprehensive benchmarking exercise aimed at promoting quality and excellence across the country’s higher learning institutions.

The Minister of State, Claudette Irere, who chaired the meeting, emphasized the need for Rwandan institutions to excel in providing an exceptional student experience, attracting highly qualified faculty, and conducting impactful research. She stated, "We must ensure our institutions offer the best to our students and conduct research that benefits Rwandans. Our curricula should meet labor market needs, based on data and quality assurance, as education is key to achieving national goals, including Vision 2050."

In her opening remarks, Dr. Rose Mukankomeje, the Director General of the Higher Education Council highlighted the importance of collaborative efforts in advancing Rwanda’s higher education landscape. She urged participants to commit to excellence, inclusivity, and relevance, noting that “only through concerted efforts can Rwanda's institutions unlock their full potential and produce graduates equipped to drive the country’s social and economic transformation.”

These discussions represent a crucial step in the country’s journey to position its higher education sector as competitive and committed to meeting both regional and international standards while supporting the nation’s vision for sustainable growth and development.
