A-Level National Exam pass rate rises by 10% as Kayonza district tops performance

The Ministry of Education announces the results of the 2024/2025 Advanced Level (A-Level) National Examinations, showing a significant improvement in performance nationwide. The pass rate rose to 89.1 percent, up from 78.6 percent in the previous academic year. The results were released at the Rwanda Education Board (REB) headquarters in Kigali.

Out of 106,418 registered candidates, 106,079 sat for the exams, and 105,997 were graded. A total of 94,409 students passed, marking a 10.5 percent increase in overall performance.

Speaking at the release, the Minister of Education, Joseph Nsengimana, attributed this progress to several initiatives, particularly the government’s remedial programme designed to support academically struggling students:

“This year’s improvement shows that our students are capable of achieving great results when they are consistently guided and supported,” Nsengimana said.

Kayonza District schools achieved the best results in the country, with a 96.9 percent pass rate, the highest nationally. This reflects a strong trend of academic excellence emerging both in Kayonza and across other districts.

Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) schools also recorded outstanding outcomes, with a 98 percent pass rate. According to Paul Umukunzi, Director General of the Rwanda TVET Board (RTB), this success is the result of increased government investment in training materials and equipment over the past three years.

Bernard Bahati, Director General of the National Examinations and School Inspection Authority (NESA), commended the collaborative effort behind the improved performance:

“The increased pass rate reflects the joint efforts made by students, teachers, parents, and the government. It’s a strong sign that our education system is heading in the right direction,” he said.

With sustained investment in both academic and technical education, the Ministry remains confident that Rwanda’s education system will continue this upward trajectory in the years ahead.
