“Give at least 15 minutes for reading to your children everyday “PS Samuel Mulindwa tells parents

Today 05th February 2020, The Ministry of Education together with USAID Rwanda launched a one year National Reading Campaign. The ceremony took place at Sovu Primary School, Kagogo Sector, Kabaya Cell, in Burera district /Northern Province and was presided over by MINEDUC Permanent Secretary Samuel MULINDWA.

In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary commended stakeholders for their efforts to help Rwandan pupils to acquire reading and writing skills. He also stressed that joint efforts to promote reading skills is a key to promote education quality.

PS Mulindwa said: Today we are gathered here to launch the national reading campaign under the theme “Make Time for Reading” and we want that the whole community gets engaged in promoting the reading culture among our children. “He later requested parents to avail at least 15 minutes a day so that children can read.  He stressed that parents can read also for their children and encourage them to take care of the books.

  Ms Leslie Marbury, Mission Director of USAID Rwanda said that USAID will continue to support the Ministry of Education to upgrade reading and skills among school children.

She stressed the importance of reading culture by saying that when children learn to read, they perform well at school.

The Launch of the 2020 National Reading Campaign coincided with the recognition of Andika Rwanda 2018 &2019 winners at every district level. It also was an occasion to launch Andika Rwanda 2020 , where parents were called upon to encourage their children to join the competition.

 This event took place in all 30 districts and the key message delivered by the Ministry of Education countrywide was  to encourage  parents find at least 15 minutes everyday and support  children to read for better quality education.
