MINEDUC receives a hundred million Frw in donation towards digitizing the TVET subsector

Kigali, 11th June 2021 , The Ministry of Education received  100,000,000Frw as a donation from  MTN Rwandacell Plc (MTN Rwanda)  to  facilitate the  establishment of  10 computer labs in TVET schools in different districts.

The event was graced by Hon Minister of State in charge of  ICT and TVET (MoS) Mrs Claudette IRERE at the Ministry’s headquarters at Kacyiru , Gasabo district, Kigali City .

In his opening remarks, the Director General of Rwanda TVET Board, Eng Paul UMUKUNZI said: “I am here to express my sincere appreciation and gratitude to MTN Rwanda  for their willingness and commitment to contribute and to support the Education sector in general and TVET subsector in particular.”

“We are thankful for the exceptional support by MTN toward the establishment of 10 computer labs in 10 different TVEt schools”, he added  

In her address, MoS IRERE said: "I would like to thank MTN Rwanda for the generosity and the great contribution in supporting education for all and in enhancing the use of ICT in teaching and learning."

Emphasizing the importance of the donation,she added:  "ICT in education is key, the donation received today - to acquire ICT equipment- will play a paramount role not only in making the process of teaching & learning smart, but also improving quality and making our education sector relevant to the labour market ".

The MTN Rwanda CEO Mitwa Kaemba Ng’ambi said: “ ICT is no longer a luxury , the fact that we are coming in with 10  smart classrooms today ,  is a small contribution now but it is really a start to a long-term relationship that we hope to build overtime.”

Every year, for the past 15 years, MTN Rwanda, with its staff at the forefront, has dedicated the month of June to initiate high impact projects within their local communities. Under the theme “We Care”, this year’s program will focus on various projects including in Education area.

The donation to the Ministry of Education  comes as MTN Rwanda kicks off the WeCare Month with a digitalization initiative in the education sector. In addition to this grant, MTN will provide a full year internet connection package for each of the TVET lab that will be established in a TVET school.

On the health front, MTN Rwanda will in coming weeks, be constructing six handwashing stations in various schools in Nyamasheke District to underwrite efforts in place to mitigate the spread of the Coronavirus. The additional handwashing stations will minimize queueing and will encourage students to adhere to preventive measures.
