MINEDUC warns Head Teachers on Mismanagement of Computers distributed under the “Smart Classroom” Initiative

On this Tuesday 22nd January 2019, The Ministry of Education conducted a meeting with Head Teachers of schools that are implementing the Smart Classroom initiative. The meeting comes after considering the increasing threat of theft of the distributed computers under smart classroom initiative, the aim was to discuss about this issue and collectively take measures. Apart from theft cases, it was noticed that some computers are not being utilized as expected and others are kept in substandard situations. The Minister of Education, Dr. Eugene Mutimura, reminded Head teachers that the distributed computers are under their full management and accountability. He requested them to take this problem as serious as possible because the Government has invested a lot of Money in the smart classroom project (24 milliards Rwandan francs). Head teachers were warned on any mismanagement case or involvement in theft cases of computers. The Rwanda National Police and Rwanda Investigation Bureau assured their support to stop the theft cases of computers. 69982 laptops were distributed in 739 schools, among them 460 laptops have been stolen so far. Irresponsibility of school staff is pointed as one of the top reasons of this issue. The Directors of Education on District level were also requested to make a strong and regular follow up of the management of schools as it is one of their core responsibilities. End.
