Minister Nsengimana Reaffirms Rwanda’s Commitment to Science and Innovation at AIMS Rwanda Graduation
Today, the Minister of Education Joseph Nsengimana joined the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS Rwanda) to celebrate the graduation of 30 students from its Cooperative Master’s Program in Mathematical Epidemiology (MathEpi) and Malaria Modelling (MaMod).
The graduates represent 12 African countries, including 14 women, underscoring AIMS Rwanda’s strong commitment to excellence, diversity, and gender inclusion in advanced mathematical sciences.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Nsengimana reaffirmed Rwanda’s commitment to advancing science, technology, and innovation as pillars of a knowledge-based economy.
“Through AIMS, we are not only advancing excellence in mathematics and science but also investing in Africa’s greatest asset — its people,” he said.
He commended AIMS Rwanda for nurturing world-class scientists who apply mathematical modelling to solve real-world challenges in health and development, emphasizing that such expertise is vital to building “a confident, self-reliant Africa driven by its own citizens.”
The Minister highlighted that the graduates’ work in mathematical epidemiology and malaria modelling extends beyond academic achievement — it represents a powerful tool for saving lives, shaping policy, and addressing Africa’s most pressing health challenges.
“Your achievements are proof that mathematics is not just about numbers; it is a critical resource for tackling real challenges and strengthening collective resilience,” he added.
The Cooperative Master’s Program combines rigorous coursework, applied research, and industry placements, with many graduates having already contributed to projects across leading African institutions. This hands-on experience, the Minister noted, embodies the kind of innovation and impact needed for Africa’s sustainable development.
