Nyagatare: Kageruka emphasized the role of School General Assembly Committees to improve the quality education

On 28th January 2019, the Ministry of Education and its agencies resumed the Quality Education Enhancement Campaign. This continuous exercise is now on its fourth phase and its theme is "Strengthening in class Quality of Teaching and Learning “. While visiting different schools in Nyagatare district in Eastern Province, Benjamin Kageruka, the Head of Education Quality Assurance Department in the Ministry of Education said “This is a countrywide exercise, and it is expected that the Ministry’s staff and education stakeholders present in each district will visit 1020 schools.” He stressed that this phase, the focus will be on teaching and learning, and other pedagogical aspects in the classroom.  In meetings with teachers, school leadership and School General Assembly Committees  (SGAC)  representatives, Kageruka said . “SGACs are there to advise and support the school on how to deliver” He later emphasized that parents should be active and build a mutual working relationship with schools to uplift the school’s performance.  “Parents Teachers Association are set to be involved and know the quality education their children get.” He said “Be involved, enquire and act. When the collaboration is assured quality education is also assured, your children deserve the best education.” He advised PTAs to be the school ambassadors also and encourage the fellow parents on their role to support the children. “Parental encouragement is crucial for the child to perform in class and some tend to forget that” he sai.   The 1st phase of the quality education enhancement awareness campaign, took place from 5-15 February 2018, country wide, and covered 622 schools. The 2nd phase of the quality education enhancement awareness campaign took place from 2-15 May 2018, country wide and covered 628 schools. The 3rd phase of the quality education enhancement awareness campaign, took place from 10- 21September and 2018 covered 899 schools countrywide. All these three previous  phases focused on general school inspection and sensitization on school dropout, class repetition, drug abuse, unwanted pregnancies, school leadership, implementation of school feeding program, integration of ICT in teaching and learning, school hygiene and sanitation, proper use of the medium of instruction and verification of qualification for some teachers in relation to their teaching subjects. This Quality Education Enhancement Campaign will end on 8 February 2019.
